Ineos Automotive has issued a recall for 7,000 Grenadier SUVs in the United States after reports emerged of doors unexpectedly opening while driving. The recall, disclosed in filings with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), cites insufficient grease on door-lock components, causing parts to stick and leading to potential mid-journey door openings.

Ineos has confirmed that it will cover the cost of repairs, marking another challenge for the automotive venture founded by billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The recall follows a series of production setbacks for the Grenadier. Last year, manufacturing was temporarily halted after a key supplier collapsed, forcing Ineos to pause operations until the issue was resolved. Despite these hurdles, the company has ramped up production at its Hambach factory in France, where chief executive Lynn Calder has outlined plans to increase output by more than 40% in 2025.

Since its launch, Ineos Automotive has distributed over 20,000 Grenadier SUVs worldwide, recently expanding into new markets, including Mexico and China. The vehicle is now available in 50 countries as the company pushes ahead with its global expansion.

Beyond his automotive ambitions, Ratcliffe has also been making waves in the football world. After acquiring a minority stake in Manchester United last year, he has implemented cost-cutting measures at the club, warning that without financial restructuring, United risked running out of cash “by Christmas.”

Despite these financial concerns, Ratcliffe recently unveiled plans for a £2 billion stadium project, a move he believes will secure the club’s long-term success.

The Supreme Court’s ruling on the Ineos recall will be closely watched, as it could have broader implications for safety regulations in the growing SUV market.
