Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf has been suspended for two games without pay following an on-field altercation with a fan during Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions, the NFL announced Monday. The league cited “conduct detrimental to the NFL” for initiating a physical confrontation, a violation of league rules prohibiting players from entering the stands or making contact with fans.

Metcalf appealed the suspension, but the ruling was upheld, Senior Vice President of Football & International Communications Michael Signora confirmed Tuesday. The penalty will sideline the two-time Pro Bowler for Pittsburgh’s final regular-season games as the team pursues its first AFC North division title since 2020.

Video footage broadcast on CBS showed Metcalf approaching a fan leaning over the railing in the front row at Ford Field. Metcalf appeared to grab the fan’s shirt collar and made a swiping motion, although it is unclear whether the fan was struck. CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson said the fan, identified as Ryan Kennedy, was wearing a Metcalf jersey and reportedly said something to provoke the receiver.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the incident on Tuesday, saying he had spoken with Metcalf. “He did explain to me why he did what he did. I certainly don’t condone the behavior, but I support DK,” Tomlin told reporters. He declined to provide further details due to the pending appeal and potential legal ramifications.

Kennedy’s attorneys have denied that their client used racial slurs or any form of hate speech and said he has faced “harassment, threats, and messages advocating violence” since the altercation. The legal team said Kennedy will not comment further due to anticipated formal proceedings.

The suspension will cost Metcalf $555,556 in lost salary and could affect $45 million in future guaranteed earnings, according to multiple reports. Despite the setback, the Steelers have reportedly reaffirmed their commitment to Metcalf for 2026 and beyond, with a base salary of $25 million set for next year, according to NFL Network.

Metcalf’s absence will affect Pittsburgh’s critical final games. He will miss Week 17 against the Cleveland Browns on December 28 and Week 18 against the Baltimore Ravens on January 4. The Steelers must win at least one of those contests to secure the AFC North crown.

The NFL emphasized that players who make unnecessary physical contact with fans “will be held accountable” under league policy. The Metcalf incident marks a high-profile enforcement of this rule as the league continues to balance player conduct with fan safety.
