The Great American State Fair, a 16-day event celebrating the diversity and heritage of the United States, officially opened on the National Mall in Washington, DC, bringing together exhibits from all 50 states and US territories in what organizers describe as a modern version of a World’s Fair.
The festival, backed by the Trump administration and organized by the nonprofit group Freedom250, features state-themed pavilions, live entertainment, military displays and family attractions. The event forms part of broader celebrations linked to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.
Speaking at the opening ceremony on Wednesday evening, US President Donald Trump described the fair as a symbol of national pride and optimism.
“This is the beginning of the golden age of America,” Trump told attendees gathered at the fairgrounds.
The idea was first proposed by Trump during his 2023 presidential campaign and has now become a large-scale public event stretching across the National Mall. Among the attractions are military flyovers, film screenings and a 110-foot Ferris wheel. Visitors can also view a smaller version of Trump’s proposed 250-foot triumphal arch.
Admission to the fair is free, and organizers have encouraged visitors to register in advance. While every state and territory is represented, several states, including Washington, Massachusetts, Illinois, North Carolina and Connecticut, chose not to organize official exhibits, citing budget constraints. Volunteer groups have stepped in to represent those states.
Large pavilion tents decorated with classical-style columns showcase interactive displays highlighting local culture, tourism and history. Arizona’s exhibit takes visitors through a sensory experience inspired by the state’s landscapes, including Antelope Canyon, pine forests and the Sonoran Desert.
Montana’s pavilion features a fossil excavation activity, while Minnesota offers visitors the chance to win prizes through a game inspired by the state bird, the common loon. Florida’s display highlights its citrus industry and includes a mini-golf attraction. Oklahoma’s exhibit recreates the sights, sounds and scents of the prairie, drawing inspiration from the famous musical “Oklahoma!”
Beyond the state pavilions, the fair includes rodeo demonstrations, traditional Mexican charro performances and opportunities to meet miniature therapy horses. Mobile exhibitions known as Freedom Trucks present stories from American history through digital displays and artificial intelligence-generated content.
Although some scheduled performers withdrew from the event earlier this month, organizers said visitors can still expect hundreds of entertainers, speakers, musicians and military bands throughout the fair.
Food vendors are offering traditional state fair favorites, including corn dogs, turkey legs, fries and pancakes from a well-known Illinois diner that gained popularity through social media.
The Great American State Fair will continue through July 10, drawing visitors from across the country to celebrate American culture, history and regional traditions.
