Hillary Clinton has taken aim at Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance, criticizing his suggestion that families could alleviate the financial burden of child care by relying more on grandparents. Clinton stated that Vance is “just not in touch with what goes on in the lives and the working careers of the vast majority of Americans.”

In an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, aired on Sunday as she promotes her new book, “Something Lost, Something Gained,” Clinton expressed her confusion over Vance’s worldview. She referred to recent comments he made in an interview with conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, alongside a 2021 remark about the U.S. being led by “childless cat ladies,” as indicative of a broader Republican resistance to child care policy reforms that would support working families.

“It sounds to me like these ideas may be personally connected to his own background, but they also reflect an ideology that emphasizes rugged individualism,” she remarked. Clinton emphasized that families need comprehensive support, noting that not all relatives are available to help. “I’m a grandparent who loves spending time with my grandchildren, but I also have my own interests. Families require child care support, especially when kids are very young,” she added.

Clinton also discussed the upcoming 2024 presidential race, sharing her feelings about Vice President Kamala Harris stepping in as the Democratic nominee after President Joe Biden exited the race. Initially uncertain, Clinton said she found Harris’s candidacy “exciting” and praised her potential to break the “glass ceiling” in American politics. “It’s a relay race. People do their part to open doors for others,” she stated.

On a lighter note, Clinton reflected on attending the funeral of former first lady Rosalynn Carter, where she was surprised to see Melania Trump. She recounted how, along with Joe and Jill Biden, she shared a warm interaction with the former first lady.

Clinton also addressed the campus protests that erupted following Hamas’s attack on Israel, expressing frustration over the lack of informed dialogue among students. She highlighted her experiences teaching a class on international affairs and noted that many students were unaware of historical context regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In her discussion about her marriage to Bill Clinton, she opened up about the challenges they faced, particularly during his impeachment. She emphasized the importance of navigating personal struggles at one’s own pace and values, expressing gratitude for their enduring partnership after nearly 50 years of marriage.
