NFL Week 16: Daniels Shines, Bills Rally, and Penix Jr. Delivers Big Win for Falcons
The NFL’s Week 16 provided plenty of drama, with standout performances from rookies and key players pushing teams closer to the playoffs. Here’s everything you need to know from Sunday’s action.
Jayden Daniels Stuns Eagles, Snap Philadelphia’s Winning Streak
The Philadelphia Eagles were poised to secure the NFC East title with an 11th straight win, but rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels had other plans. Despite losing Jalen Hurts to a concussion in the first quarter, the Eagles seemed to be in control. However, Daniels led a 57-yard, game-winning drive, capped off by a five-yard touchdown pass with just six seconds left, securing a thrilling 36-33 win for the Washington Commanders.
Daniels, who threw for five touchdowns in the game, became the first Washington quarterback since Mark Rypien in 1991 to accomplish the feat. His performance gave the Commanders a 95% chance of making the playoffs and continued their late-season surge. Daniels, who also rushed for 81 yards, reflected on the win saying, “The game’s never done ‘til the clock hits zero. I live for these big-time moments.”
Meanwhile, Hurts’ injury left the Eagles without their star quarterback for the remainder of the game. Backup QB Kenny Pickett managed to extend the lead, but Philadelphia struggled offensively in the second half. Despite a strong start with Saquon Barkley’s 109 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter, the Eagles couldn’t hold on, allowing Washington to rally.
Buffalo Bills Hold Off Patriots in Nail-Biting Victory
The Buffalo Bills faced a tough challenge from the New England Patriots but managed to secure a 24-21 win after overcoming an early 14-point deficit. The victory keeps the Bills in the hunt for the AFC’s No. 1 seed, although they would need the Kansas City Chiefs to falter.
Quarterback Josh Allen struggled, throwing for just 154 yards and one touchdown. He also appeared to injure his right hand but continued playing. Despite Allen’s off day, running back James Cook starred, rushing for 126 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-tying score in the third quarter. Tyler Bass’ field goal and a fumble recovery by Taron Johnson helped the Bills extend their lead, allowing them to hang on for their ninth win in 10 games.
Michael Penix Jr. Shines in First Start for Falcons
In Atlanta, rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. made an immediate impact in his first start, leading the Falcons to a dominant 34-7 win over the New York Giants. Penix went 18-of-27 for 202 yards, though a few dropped passes prevented him from recording a touchdown. Coach Raheem Morris praised the rookie’s performance, calling it “almost flawless” as the Falcons improved their playoff chances.
The Falcons bounced back from a four-game losing streak with Penix under center, securing a much-needed victory. Despite a slow start, including a 7-0 deficit early in the second quarter, Atlanta’s defense and special teams helped them take control. Running back Bijan Robinson added two rushing touchdowns, and the defense scored two pick-sixes.
The Falcons now have a 55% chance of making the playoffs as they look to continue their momentum with Penix at the helm.
